"John Simpson, the BBC world affairs editor, has compared last month's hastily negotiated licence fee settlement with "waterboarding", arguing it leaves the corporation "at the government's mercy"

Here is a suggestion, to deal with the "at the government's mercy" problem, lets pay for the Beeb by subscription, those that want it buy it, those that don't want it don't. And with the technology already available in most homes you could even just sell individual shows and programmes, the Beeb even could happily compete with the evel Rupert for sport, Terrible place the Free Market, cohesion is much easier than having to respond to the Menace of the Masses.
