Left Wing Porn

Lots of fun to be had in "Liberal Gene" spotting this week "Liberal" being the most misused word in the English language. my interpretation of "Liberal" is two fold.
1, "Liberalism" being a belief in upholding and expanding human freedom of action
2, "Liberals" someone who you can hold a conversation with, without yours and their individual prejudices or emotions effecting the substance of the debate. A pursuit of objective reality if you like.

Liberalism in my view should run through everyone's opinions and beliefs, we are after all living in a Liberal Democracy. In the US "Socialism" is such a dirty word that the left have had to steal another less offensive term in which to occupy. Liberalism is a word like Conservatism that without historical or cultural context is such a broad brush as to be useless, Iran is a good example.

What struck me on reading the science about the "Liberal" gene was how similar all this seems to Internet Porn addiction. Lets put the Liberal Left, the Chris Dillows and Norman Geras to one side and deal with the "fruit cake Left" (yup there is a fruitcake right as well) the Pollys, the Haris, the Alternets of this world, quite often you ask yourself "what are these people on", they dont just miss small subtle points and facts they look out to the sea and see a desert.

A few years ago I got very addicted to running at the gym, sorting myself out involved going cold turkey to cure my addiction that was affecting my life and the lives of others around me. Its very hard to describe how the effect of the addiction creeps up on you, the way I would describe it is "hypnotised" When I was up to speed and "in the zone" my mind was completely in control of my body and I felt I could do almost anything, I was superman, euphoria took over as I suppose it does with most addicts, that is the thrill.

I suspect what is going on with these type of people, is that they are getting a kick from feeling good about feeling bad. The novelty gene has shaped their minds to hunt out new poor people, new oppressed people, ignoring things like Islamism being hell bent of their very own destruction, And it seems the same is with internet porn, yes I know porn has been around since we have and will continue, but internet porn is something else. The delivery mechanism is instant. The addict hunts out novelty for the kick, this has seen the growth of new forms of sexual activities and niches found on the internet, just like the Pollys turning poorer people into poor people and ignoring the fact that quite often their situation is their own fault. The Left too is full of niches, who is this weeks oppressed minority? And the aloofness, just like me on the treadmill, Superman.

I am certainly not saying there are no poor or disadvantaged or oppressed people here in the UK or elsewhere in the West, but most is not as a result of economic policy. drug addiction, family breakdown, and most of all Mental illness are the biggest causes, slavery in the UK is certainly a bye product of immigration policy. All are very difficult issues to deal with whatever party you support or belief you hold.

The human mind is essentially a pattern recognition instrument, first you hunt out the shape or your parents faces, then move onto the wider environment as you live your life and grow up collecting and processing more and more pattens from Gran and Grandpa to the difference between international socialism and national socialism. The more complex the pattern the easier it is to see patterns that are not really there, and it happens to us all. And the smarter you are the more likely you are to see more patterns and more non-patterns too, cue the great moderation!

My wife who is a former senior community midwife put it best, she left because she was appealed at the culture surrounding child care in the community "I am sick of social workers, wallowing in the misery of others instead of trying to help people care for themselves and their children" is what she wrote in her resignation letter.

For wallow read euphoria. An addicted mind is not a rational mind.
