The Uncertain Valley

Imagine for one minute you lived in a small "horse and Cart" village who's ways and customs had not changed for 100s if not 1000s of years. Everyone knew their place, their world was ordered and settled. Religion kept the order together through thick and thin, with a blueprint for law and personal morality.

Imagine one day "Modernity" arrived, not over time but they wake up one day to find a satellite dish and Television and all the things that make us modern suddenly with them. And in the name of free speech from the modern world, hard core pornography is beamed straight into their lives.

It must be like being invaded from an alien world, all the certainties erased in one, a revolution in an instant. You would want to fight back?

This pretty much describes large parts of the Muslim world, and what on the face of it looks like hate towards us, its not its complete fear.

This is the root of 9/11 and its latest manifestation is what is looking more and more like a Pakistani civil war. Looking back you can see how ruthless dictators have been the only people to have any chance of ruling these places.

I am not sure how all this is going to pan out, we are now in the age of nuclear proliferation, its no longer superpowers who write the rules of the game, its now maybe a rogue Pakistani intelligence officer who is sympathetic to the Taliban/Islamist cause and hands them the means of victory.

I really do think we now up against the clock, and its ticking faster. It wont be the end of the world, but we could be heading into a future of chaos. I hope not, but Ive seen nothing over the past few years since 9/11 to say we are not headed in that direction, and the reason for that is simple none of us, and that includes our leaders have any idea on how to deal with the circumstances we find ourselves in.
